Q. What is Play Therapy?

A. The Association for Play Therapy share the definition as, "the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development."  Simply put, play therapy is to children what counseling/psychotherapy is to adults; The child is given the freedom to communicate verbally and/or nonverbally as the therapist helps the child to address and resolve problems.  

 

Q. How long does a Play Therapy Session usually last?

A. Play Therapy sessions are usually scheduled for 35-45 minutes.  However, times are adjusted based on the child's temperment and needs.

 

Q. What are the benefits of Play Therapy?

A. Through play therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others.  Allowing children to confront problems in the clinical Play Therapy setting, helps them to find healthier solutions and to change maladaptive thoughts and emotions. Further, Play therapy allows children the opportunity to resolve problems and concerns in a way that is developmentally appropriate to the child.  

 

Q. Is Play Therapy right for my child?

A. Play therapy is is the preferred model of treatment for children ages 3 to 10 years old experiencing any type of life challenges, from mild adjustment to more severe mental health disorders.
